Isometric force and gait in patients with stroke
Lee Kyoung-Moo
Abstract
Objectives: The strength of the lower extremities is an important part of walking ability in patients with stroke. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between isometric muscle force of the lower extremities and walking ability in these patients.

Methods: Among patients with cerebral hemispheric stroke admitted to the Chungbuk National University Hospital, those who underwent an isometric muscle test were included. The author obtained the isometric muscle force of the lower extremities and indicators reflecting the walking ability of the participants, including the ambulation score of the modified Barthel index, 10 m walking time, Functional ambulation categories score, maximum walking distance, and the use of walking aids by retrospective chart review. The correlation between these indicators and isometric muscle force was analyzed.

Results: The isometric muscle force of the paretic lower extremities, the paretic to non-paretic force ratio, and isometric force/weight of the paretic lower extremities showed a significant correlation with the ambulation score of the modified Barthel index, 10 m walking time, Functional ambulation categories score, maximum walking distance, and the use of walking aids.

Conclusions: The isometric force of the paretic lower extremity showed a significant relationship with the subject's walking ability. Therefore, the measurement of isometric force can be useful in predicting the walking ability of post-stroke patients and establishing treatment plans.
